new joomla demo installation

the current database for my youmovies demo in cpanel is demo2. however, i am attempting to switch from youmovies demo to youshows demo.

after i back everything up, do you suggest that i just delete that database and then follow the demo installation tutorial again? i basically need to recreate the same database (demo2) but with youshows demo instead, right?

No no, the database contains the demo, so you would be overwriting every modulesetting.

Let's not go through this again. The simplest way would be to install the new template on site 1 with all your content. Then on the sub domain you install a demo to see how the settings are. Then you install the new modules on site 1 and copy the settings from the subdomain. Then you would have a new template on site 1 with new modules but with all your content.

What you are saying above is making a sql dump from site 1 with a partial import on site 2. Have you read up on that? Well, since you haven't i can't advise to go down that road. Sorry, but we can't make it any easier than just install a new template and new extensions on your current site, with maybe a demo install on another domain to learn from.

Sure you can, but then everything is gone from youmovies, you would have youshows then (as expected:). When you then import the old database again, you would overwrite everything once again losing most of the settings from youshows.

But i will have to draw a line here. In the previous thread i have given you several possibilities, but you dismiss all of them being too hard. Instead you pick a method that is way harder and judging from your questions haven't read up on, let alone ever done it.

Before this all ends up in tears and more frustration, think about this. What is so hard about installing a new template, a couple of extensions, and configuring them? If you just read the instructions on the demo of the template, read the instructions on the forum regarding the modules, this would take you not more than 1 hour.

We will help you out with that on the forum if you just read the instructions. Let's forget about all the other ways, because i have a feeling we will be going over and over it again and that it will end with more problems than we started with.

ok thanks. i'm not dismissing the options you've given at all, i'm purely trying to understand them. it takes some time. thank you for your explanation above.

my point was that i do not want to upload or use the backed up (youmovies) database again. do i have to? basically i only have like 80 articles that i want to keep, so i assumed deleting the database entirely and starting fresh would be a viable option in this situation.

that's where maybe i was not clear in my writing.

if i don't use the previous database at all, and in fact just create a completely new one with the fresh install, couldn't i just use export content or j2xml etc to backup my articles and keep the articles only? everything else is of little importance to me and there are benefits to starting fresh in that regard that i won't bother mentioning.

however, if you still think that is silly, i will proceed with the option you've suggested above.

Well i know of the existence of the extensions you mention, i don't know how they function. At least one has good ratings on the jed so should be fine. When you go down that road i would first install akeeba for a complete backup, and download that backup, and than do an backup with one of the extensions you mentioned. Then you are covered from both sites.

It is just what you feel comfortable with really. But reading all this, i would just take the easy way.

i've been asking around, looking into possibilities, talking with cpanel and on other extension forums. just trying to wrap my head around this and figure out what works best in my particular situation. like you said: what i feel comfortable with.

i'm not good at framing my questions though cause this is like a new language.

anyhow, thank you for taking the time to explain that it can be done either way (by using one of the extensions i mentioned and just backing everything up to be careful... or by creating a subdomain first and learning from it etc.) as long as i don't try to 'force' my youmovies database into the youshows database.

yes, i was going to use akeeba as well as other methods to back up beforehand.
